PUSHCHAIR PROBLEM!!
 BAD DAY....I had always hoped that Kala would eventually grow out of her interest in babies/tots in pushchairs but OH took the dogs out today and she simply turned a deaf ear to him and hurried off to visit the baby!!!!! And then to top it all, she did the same thing again with a different pushchair!! :( I have always managed to call her back or get hold of her and get a lead on over the past months. She is now 18 months old. After some embarresing apologies she was brought home thereafter in disgust. What do we do here?? She means no harm whatsoever, just wants to say hello and give the kiddy a few licks etc but clearly the parents don't know that and they should not have to put up with this kind of behaviour. I really don't know where to start. Kala is a lovely friendly dog with everyone, it's a typical lab nature. She has not been brought up around babies, just our granddaughter aged 5 when Kala arrived. She therefore has no knowledge of small babes in arms or prams and is fasinated by them. Rufous can be trusted completely thank goodness so there is only Kala to concern us. With spring/summer on the way we are going to be faced by more and more of the pushchair/pram brigade so need to nip this in the bud somehow quickly before a littleun gets scratched or something....I don't have any friends with babies to go walking with unfortunately - are there any volunteers in the Portsmouth area to help me out with getting her used to babies/pushchairs. Just a thought we might meet up for regular sessions :D Otherwise, would an old pushchair purchase be worthwhile? Her recall is pretty good generally speaking. Not instant, but hey she's a lab....Any time today will do. Perhaps others may have had similar problems? Would appreciate any help available. What with Rufous having to be kept occupied so that he doesn't chase the boys footballs, and Kala with her baby compulsion, I am on a hiding to nothing me thinks....Let's open the bar and have a few  Hic Hic!!!!

I definitely would suggest a visit to a bootfair Sheila - pick up a dolly and an old pushchair - bring it out several times a day and then she should lose interest I would think. Make her sit by the buggy and reward her for sitting nicely, just keep it all low key. She is such a young girl, she is just be overfriendly so would think some de-sensitising to this situation would be a great help. It's very difficult to get dogs away from buggys when the littl'un is tucking into something nice though eh!

Buying a pushchair may well help :D It might also help to teach her a 'leave' command..and then take the show on the road by walking her near a place where mums and pushchairs go - a school, clinic etc and giving big, tasty rewards for calm behaviour and staying focussed on you. at the moment, something is rewarding her - it might be the novelty of the buggy and licking the child, or the commotion that ensues. if you can make obeying you more rewarding - starting from a distance far enough away (and with her on a long line if needs be) so that she can stay focussed on you and earn her treats - then you should find she can learn to stay calm.
